It's been a while since I've connected with you all, so I thought I would give you an update as to what's going on with my album. It is currently in production. I have so far completed 2 singles… “Circa 2025” and “Test The CZ.” If you haven't heard them yet, check them out below..
I've just finished creating my next track. This track was based on a dream I had. In that dream, I kept hearing a song from the movie, “The Wizard of Oz.” Not any of the popular songs like “Over the Rainbow” or “We're Off To See The Wizard.” No, it's the song after Dorothy and co. wake up from the Wicked Witch's spell that put them to sleep with the tainted Poppies. Here's a refresher..
Apparently the official song name is, “Optimistic Voices" (You're out of the Dark)… Hmmm. I always thought it was called, “You're Outta The Woods.” I was compelled to take this song and my dream and turn it into something. I decided to take a clip of the music, sample it, mangle it, and hope I don't get sued by Warner Bros. It's turned into a cool, ambient, eclectic song that I've aptly named, “Outta The Woods.” I'd like to share with you the process of some of the elements that were put into the creation of this track…
First I had to deal with the elements from the original song in order to make it recognizable yet unrecognizable. So as noted I sampled the track using the Sampler on my Modular Rack… Check out my video below as I walk you through the process..
First I'm triggering the entire track (yes, the sampler has a touch screen… cool!)
Then a quick trigger/release for what I'm going to use
Next, I'm routing the audio from the sampler, to my computer through my mixer. I want to use this effects plugin I have called, “Spacer” (pictured) it has several granular effects which basically chops up the sample and re-distributes the bits of audio, as well as adds delays and noise, to really mangle it all. As you can hear it gives it a real “dreamy” type effect. Trying to get close to what I heard in my sleep.
Finally you can hear the samples in context to the song. I've also altered the pitch via MIDI keyboard and added layers of percussion and other synth sounds to enter into an ethereal dreamworld. When it is completed, it should sound pretty cool, especially after my engineer/producer Byron gets a hold of it. It's taken me a while to really nail down that sample to where I want it. But I'm quite please with the results.
There is another cool element with this song I'd like to talk about. I made this beautiful patch with my Modular system. Routing multiple oscillators, filters, Low Pass Gates, and LFOs; coupling all with an arpeggiator from my DAW to create a thing of beauty… The below clip is the Grand Finale of the song. Modular and Analog Synths playing in harmony.. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I designed this Modular to be an instrument, not something to just generate random noises. Below shows I am on the right track. You might notice there are still some blank panels on my modular system, which means I have room for more module expansion. We shall see what I add to my mad box next!
I'm not sure if this track will be released as a single. But I may need to do so, in order to see if the samples pass YouTube's copyright algorithm… If they do, I'll feel better about sticking it on the album. Hope you enjoyed listening and looking into what it takes to create some of my music.
This album is becoming a bit more complicated than I initially intended, but I'm loving every moment of it, and don't want to rush it and release it until I'm 100% happy with it. If you got this far, thanks for taking the time, hope you found some of it interesting.
